Quick Verdict

A tender, unhurried coming-of-age drama with two genuinely affecting lead performances, held back by a bloated runtime and a third act that mistakes seriousness for depth.

Story

We meet our two teenagers in the middle of ordinary chaos - school corridors, half-finished homework, the casual cruelty and casual kindness of friends who do not yet know they are characters in someone else's memory. Thella Kaagitham does not invent a dramatic premise for their meeting. They simply find each other, the way most people do, through proximity and curiosity and a shared sense of being slightly out of step with everyone else.

What follows is the familiar architecture of first love: stolen glances, misunderstandings that feel catastrophic, apologies that feel like treaties. Bandreddy shoots much of this with an unhurried camera, letting silences breathe. But as the two grow closer, the film shifts gears. Choices get made - small ones, the kind teenagers make without understanding their weight - and the consequences arrive slowly, then all at once. This is where Thella Kaagitham wants to hurt you, and in scattered moments, it succeeds.

Review

The film's greatest asset is its cast. Harsh Roshan plays the boy with a nervous energy that never tips into caricature; he fidgets, he deflects, he looks away at exactly the wrong moments. Nakshatra matches him with a quieter, more watchful presence, and the scenes between them have a lived-in warmth that is hard to fake. Supporting turns from Deepak Malli, Sravya Dimple, and Ajay fill out the world without ever stealing focus, which is exactly what this story needs.

Where the film stumbles is in its sense of proportion. At 163 minutes, Thella Kaagitham asks for a lot of patience, and it does not always reward it. Entire stretches of the middle act could be trimmed without losing emotional continuity. Bandreddy seems reluctant to let go of any scene, as though cutting one would betray the honesty he is chasing. The result is a film that feels less like a story being told and more like a memory being replayed in real time - occasionally beautiful, occasionally exhausting.

There is also the matter of the third act, which leans hard into consequence and, in doing so, loses some of the lightness that made the first half sing. The tonal shift is deliberate, but the execution is uneven. What should feel like an inevitable gut-punch sometimes feels like a lecture. Still, when the film lands, it lands. There is one late scene - no spoilers - that earns every minute of its runtime, and it will stay with you.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Harsh Roshan and Nakshatra share an easy, believable chemistry
  • Unhurried direction that respects adolescent silences
  • Genuinely moving final act in places
  • Strong supporting ensemble that never overpowers the leads

Cons

  • 163-minute runtime is not justified by the material
  • Middle act sags noticeably
  • Third act tonal shift feels heavier than the story can carry
  • Some dramatic beats repeat themselves without adding new insight

Final Verdict

Thella Kaagitham is not a perfect film, but it is an honest one, and in a landscape crowded with loud, forgettable releases, honesty counts for something. It asks you to sit with two teenagers as they fumble toward each other and then fumble away, and if you have ever been one of those teenagers, parts of it will land like a stone in your chest. The runtime is a genuine problem, and the third act does not fully earn its gravity - but the performances do, and that may be enough. Worth a watch, ideally with patience and a willingness to feel a little foolish again.
